When the wind passes over the surface of the flags, which are sensitive to every change and movement of the wind, the air is purified and made sacred by the mantras. The prayers on the flags become a permanent part of the universe, while the image fades due to exposure to the elements. Just as life goes on and is replaced by new life, Tibetans renew their hopes for the world by continuing to hang new flags next to old ones. This act symbolizes welcoming life changes and acknowledging that each being is part of a greater circle. The symbols and mantras on flags are sacred, they should be treated with respect. They should never be placed on the floor or used as clothing. Old flags should be burned.
